Crib programs aim to keep infants safe

It's the ABCs of infant safe sleep -- Alone, on the Back, in a Crib.
But as counselors and researchers reviewing sudden infant deaths around the country have found, there are often financial, social and educational barriers to many families having a proper crib where their baby can sleep.
"We keep finding new risk factors that put babies at risk for sudden death, and we have to address them," said Judith Bannon, executive director of Sudden Infant Death Services of Pennsylvania and founder of the Cribs for Kids program. "In places that do good child-death review (she sits on the review board for Allegheny County), they've found that 90 percent of infant deaths are happening someplace besides a properly assembled and maintained crib."
Cribs for Kids: Pittsburgh-based Cribs for Kids was founded in 1998 after the local child death review team noted that most sudden infant deaths were happening in unsafe sleep settings. Starting in 1998, Bannon and a growing band of volunteers have been working to get cribs out to families who need them in greater Pittsburgh and beyond, and to spread the message that babies are safer in their own crib -- as much as 40 times safer, according to some researchers.
"Unfortunately, babies continue to die in our county, but we've given out 6,500 cribs since 1998 and we've kept track of those families and not one of them has had a baby die in the first year of life."
Through a special partnership with Graco, the group distributes a special make of the company's popular portable crib to families referred to from prenatal caregivers and social workers. The cribs are both easy to assemble and pack up to go to a baby sitter or grandparent, and small enough that they can be set up in the parents' bedroom.
"They sit next to the bed, mom just separated by mesh from the baby, that's what I consider the safest setting," Bannon said.
The program started to branch out to other cities just 18 months ago, but already there are chapters of Cribs for Kids operating in 152 communities in 35 states. Many similar efforts have been established by local governments and child-welfare groups seeking to prevent infant sleep deaths.
The infant survival group First Candle, backed by an $11 million grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, recently launched a new program that aims to give away as many as 200,000 cribs and educate new parents about infant safe sleep in Indiana, Washington state and Washington, D.C.
The effort will include extensive follow-up with families to determine if they continue safe sleep practices throughout the baby's first year, and will do in-depth investigations of any infant deaths that do occur in the targeted states.
